Uran Extinct Volcano

Uran is an extinct volcano in the western side of Uran-Togoo Tulga Uul Natural Monument in Bulgan province, 80 km west of Bulgan town. Uran means "Artistic",  Mongols named it so because its ridge of the crater is one of many examples of circles that arise in nature resembled a nice creature of a craftsman.

The area is situated in the Khutag-Öndör district of Bulgan Province. A smaller area was initially protected in 1965 by State Great Khural Resolution No. 17. On 1995, it was designated as a Natural Monument by Parliament Resolution No. 26 with an area of 5,800 hectares. The peak over 1686 m form a circle-shaped ridge about 500 m across that contains a crater lake at about 20 m wide and 1.5 m deep. The Uran and surrounding others are considered to be the remnant of an extinct  stratovolcano which formed between about 20-25 thousands years ago. Also,

Uran's highest point provides unobstructed, panoramic views of the volcanic field, distant blue mountains and valleys filled by sheep herd like threw pearls on green carpet. Uran Volcano also offers visitors excellent opportunities for observing and understanding volcanic formation. The large volcanic field surrounding the monument contains recognizable volcanoes such as Tulga, means "Tripod", Jalavch - "pot", Togoo - "cauldron" which are located 12 km south of the Uran uul.

Uran is widely considered by many who visit it to be one of the most stunning parts of the North Mongolia. It is beautiful, utterly wild and unspoilt. Being located within  national park, it is by law off-limits to most standard wilderness industries such as farming or mining. It can be climbed in a day from the shadow side, and the climb is considered steep, but walkable.  A paved road spirals around the volcano and visitors can drive up to a parking lot at the rim. Hiking trails circle the rim as well as lead down into the mouth of the volcano.

Uran-Togoo Tulga Uul Natural Monument is one of the outstanding landmarks where the rolling grasslands meet the foothills of the Khangai Mountains. Its soil is very fertile and plants of steppe or forest-steppe grow here. Larch dotted forest, asp, aspen and birch trees are grown in shadow side of the mountains. From bus and plants,  Цагаан төмс, мангир, хонгорзул, алтанзул, алтангагнуур, тайжийн жинс, далан түрүү, үхэр гоньд, хунчир, хөвөн оройт, Монгол туйплан зэрэг эмийн болон хүнсний ургамал, хавтуул, хурган засаа, үнэгэн сүүл, хонхон цэцэг, бэр цэцэг,  хазаар өвс зэрэг ургамал ургана.

The Volcano has breeding populations of various birds: grouse, sparrow, owl, falcon, cuckoo and hoopoe.  Snake is very common. Maral deer, argali sheep, reodeer, wild boar, wild goat, marmot, gopher, steppe rabbit live here.
